Inside the houses is a museum

The Hanging Houses are a medieval building owned by the city, and they contain the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español, run by the Fundación Juan March. There's no separate ticket for 'the houses': you see the interior through the museum, which doesn't charge.

Check the hours before you plan your day. It's closed on Mondays, shuts from 14:00 to 16:00 Tuesday to Saturday, and only opens in the morning on Sundays. Last entry is 20 minutes before closing. It's also closed on 24, 25 and 31 December, 1 and 6 January, the afternoon of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and from 18 to 21 September.

Guided tours are only for pre-arranged groups of 8 to 25 people, Tuesday to Friday.

The Ciudad Encantada, 30 km away

The Ciudad Encantada (Enchanted City) is a park in Valdecabras, about 30 kilometres from Cuenca. It has no online sales, so you pay at the ticket office. Bring cash: the park can't guarantee card payments because of poor coverage. The circular route is 3 km and takes around an hour and a half. Opening times may change with the weather.

If you're coming from Madrid without a car, a day trip takes care of the transport. That's the only thing you'd pay for at the Hanging Houses, since the museum is free.
