Spain has no single free day. Each public authority sets its own, and even within one city the free hours don't line up. Before you look city by city, it helps to know who runs the museum.
Three rules that explain most of it
State museums. Those run by the Ministry of Culture are free on Saturday afternoons and Sundays. The Saturday start varies: 14:00 at the Museo del Greco and the Museo de Antropología, 16:00 at the sculpture and ceramics museums. The Museo de Antropología, for example, is also free on 18 April, 18 May, 12 October and 6 December.
Museums run by the Andalusian government. The fine arts museums in Seville and Granada don't charge EU citizens who can prove it, so bring your ID card or passport. The same goes for Medina Azahara.
City museums. Here each council decides. Barcelona opens a dozen venues on Sundays from 15:00, and Zaragoza concentrates its free entry on the first Sunday of the month.
Free museums, city by city
| City | Free for everyone | The condition |

| Barcelona | A dozen museums, Sun from 15:00 · MNAC Sat from 15:00 · MACBA Thu, Fri and Sat from 18:00 | MNAC and Museu Picasso need booking. Picasso tickets are released four days ahead, at 10:00 |
| Valencia | Museo de Bellas Artes, free entry · IVAM Wed 16:00–19:00 and Sun · Museo Fallero Sun and public holidays · National ceramics museum Sat from 16:00 and Sun | Bellas Artes closes on Mondays |
| Málaga | Picasso, Sun in the last two hours · Alcazaba Sun from 14:00 · Carmen Thyssen and Pompidou Sun from 16:00 | At the Picasso, the ticket office closes half an hour earlier |
| Seville | Cathedral, Sun from 17:00 depending on the liturgical calendar · Alcázar, "Lunes gratuito" (free Monday) | Cathedral: ticket office only. The Alcázar ticket is €0 online and can sell out |
| Granada | Cathedral, Wed afternoon · Alhambra Museum and Palace of Charles V | Cathedral: get the free ticket on the diocese's website |
| Córdoba | Mezquita-Catedral, Mon–Sat 8:30–9:30 | No groups, and not on days of special celebrations |
| Zaragoza | Forum, River Port, Baths, Theatre and Gargallo, first Sunday of the month | Those on the Roman route are also free on 29 January, 23 April, 18 May and 12 October. The Gargallo has announced a temporary closure for works |
| Toledo | Museo del Greco, Sat from 14:00 and Sun | State museum hours |
| Valladolid | Museo Nacional de Escultura, Sat 16:00–19:30 and Sun 10:00–14:00 | Closed on Mondays |
| Bilbao | Museo de Bellas Artes, Tue 10:00–18:00 | Only part of it opens that day. The Guggenheim has no fixed free day |
Free, but not for everyone
Several well-known free slots depend on your passport:
- Patrimonio Nacional. At El Escorial, from October to March, Wednesdays and Sundays 15:00–18:00, for EU and Ibero-American citizens, and for EU residents and EU work-permit holders, with proof. The Royal Palace has its own afternoons, Monday to Thursday.
- Alcázar of Segovia. Tuesdays 14:00–16:00, except public holidays, for EU citizens only, and without the tower.
- Cave of Nerja. One entry at 9:15, Monday to Friday on working days, with 60 tickets a day for EU citizens. They're released online 48 hours before.
The Palacio de Liria is another case: one free session at 10:00 on Mondays that aren't public holidays, released at 12:00 on the Monday before.
Where you book and where you queue
Free doesn't mean no paperwork. At the Reina Sofía, MNAC and Museu Picasso you reserve the free ticket online. At the Prado and Seville Cathedral you get it at the ticket office, and at the Prado only until capacity is reached. If a museum is the reason for your trip, don't leave it to a free slot: pay and choose your time.
Places with no free day
The Guggenheim, the Sagrada Família, the Oceanogràfic and Bioparc Valencia have no fixed free day for the general public. At these, only certain groups and children get in without paying, each place with its own age limit.
