How much time the free hours really give you

The last two hours cost nothing, but they only cover the Collection, and tickets come from the ticket office until capacity is reached. From Monday to Saturday, entry stops at 19:30 and staff start clearing the rooms at 19:50. Walk in at 18:00 and you have an hour and fifty minutes at most. Arrive at the last moment and you get twenty.

That's enough for a few chosen paintings. For an unhurried visit, the €15 ticket with a time slot is worth paying: it includes temporary exhibitions, which cost half price during the free hours. More detail in Prado free hours.

A two-hour route

Start on the first floor in Room 12 with Las Meninas. Move on to The Surrender of Breda (Room 9A), Titian's Charles V on Horseback and Rubens's The Three Graces (Room 29). Then turn to Goya: The Third of May (Room 64) and Saturn, one of the Black Paintings (Room 67). Finish on the ground floor with Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights (Room 56A).

Works can move between rooms, so check the museum plan before you go. There are more paintings, and what to look for in each, in Prado artworks.

When a reseller makes sense

For a plain ticket, the museum's own website wins: it sells at the official price, with the time slot you choose, and the audio guide adds €5. Tiqets and GetYourGuide charge more for the ticket alone. Tiqets' ticket can't be cancelled, and neither can its combo with an in-app audio guide.

A reseller earns its fee when you want a guided tour booked ahead, in a small group or paired with the Royal Palace. On Tiqets those tours can be cancelled before the date or time slot, depending on the product. The museum's own guided tour costs the ticket price plus €10, is sold at the ticket office and runs at fixed times. Those listed for Spanish are 10:30, 11:00, 12:30, 13:00, 15:15 and 17:00, so ask at the desk about tours in English.
