The busy hours and the calm ones
The museum itself names two peaks: mornings from 10:00 to 12:00, and 19:00, when free entry starts. For a calmer visit it recommends coming between 14:00 and 18:00. Tickets have a time slot until the free hours begin, so you choose when you buy.
Sundays are different: the museum closes at 14:30 and the free hours fall at midday, from 12:30 to 14:30. It's shut on Tuesdays, so on a short trip make Tuesday your Prado and Thyssen day.
Free hours still need a ticket
Even in the free hours you need a ticket, which you reserve online. It's worth doing, because this is the day's other peak. Free entry is for individual visitors only and doesn't include temporary exhibitions with a time slot or special rate. Last entry is at 20:30, so aim to arrive at 19:00. The rest of the conditions are in Reina Sofía free hours.
If you get in free because of age, study or unemployment, you don't book online: you collect your ticket at the ticket office on the day, with official proof and a passport or Spanish ID card. The museum advises foreign students to show an International Student Identity Card (ISIC).
Tiqets, Headout or the museum's own site
The basic ticket costs the same on Tiqets and Headout as on the official website, and Tiqets' can't be cancelled. What only the museum sells is the €18 two-visit ticket, handy if two hours isn't enough, since you can come back any day within a year.
Audio guides go the other way. The official ticket with audio guide costs €18, and Tiqets' versions cost more. A reseller makes sense for a guided tour, which isn't on the museum's price list. The museum does run free guided visits: you sign up at the meeting point, first come first served, from half an hour before. Ask which language they're in.
Works on the move and the museum's other site
The Collections are being rearranged until 2028, so before you go looking for a particular work, check its entry on the museum's website. Start with the Reina Sofía artworks guide. Your ticket lets you leave and come back the same day, so you can take a break. The Palacio de Velázquez in the Retiro is a separate site, and entry there is free.
