Book, even though it's free

This is the big difference from the Prado: at the Reina Sofía the free hours still require a ticket, which you can book online. Do it, because 19:00 is one of the busiest moments of the day, according to the museum itself.

The free ticket includes the Collection and temporary exhibitions, except those with a time slot or a special rate. If you're going for one of those, check its conditions on the website.

Two hours on paper, less in practice

The museum recommends about two hours for a visit, and in this slot you get an hour and 45 minutes if you walk in right at the start. That's enough for Guernica and the works around it. If you'd like more calm, the museum names 14:00–18:00 as its quietest stretch, and then you'll need a standard ticket.

Five days free from opening to closing

On five dates a year, entry is free all day: 18 April, 18 and 22 May, 12 October and 6 December. You book these online too. Check which weekday each date falls on: on a Sunday the museum closes at 14:30, and if the date is a Tuesday, its usual closing day, confirm on the museum website.

Free entry at any hour

With a valid official document and a DNI (Spanish ID card) or passport, at the ticket office on the day of your visit:

• Under-18s and over-65s.
• Students aged 18 to 25 on any course. Foreign students are advised to bring an ISIC card.
• Carné Joven youth card holders.
• People legally registered as unemployed.
• Working teachers.
• People with a disability of 33% or more, and their companion if the document says so.

You can't book this ticket online. Family groups with at least one adult and three children on the same large-family certificate, or two children if one has a disability, also get in free.

Closing days and the Retiro venues

Every Tuesday, plus 1 and 6 January, 1 May, 15 May, 9 November and 24, 25 and 31 December. The 15 May and 9 November closures can change with the Madrid region's work calendar.

The Retiro venues, the Palacio de Velázquez and the Palacio de Cristal, are free and keep different hours: 10:00 to 21:00 from April to September, and 10:00 to 18:00 from October to March. As of 4 November 2026, the Palacio de Cristal remains temporarily closed for architectural improvements.
