Free Saturday or a €12 ticket

Saturday from 15:00 looks like the best deal, and in summer it is: the museum stays open until 20:00, which gives you five hours. From October to April it closes at 18:00 and the galleries clear 15 minutes earlier, leaving you under three hours. That's enough for part of the collection, not all of it.

The first Sunday of the month gives you more room if you arrive at 10:00, since it closes at 15:00. Either way, book online ahead: without a booking your place isn't assured.

Paying gets you something else: the general ticket is valid for two days within a month of purchase, so you can split the visit.

The €2 ticket for the views

If you're only going up Montjuïc for the view, the basic ticket gets you into the building and onto the viewing terraces. It doesn't include the galleries, and the usual free-entry rules and discounts don't apply to it.

Poble Espanyol, Articket and Vall de Boí

Three official combinations are worth comparing: MNAC + Poble Espanyol for €20, Articket for €38, and a ticket with the Centre del Romànic de la Vall de Boí for €15, useful if you're heading to that valley. Articket won't pay off if you're only going into one or two museums.
