The cathedral asks for a €1 donation for upkeep, left at the entrance. In the museum and dome, under-9s, priests and members of religious orders with proof, and ICOM members get in free.

Booking

The museum and dome are paid for at the ticket office. The guided visit to the crypt is booked by email, on request, at 10:00 or 12:00, and paid in advance.

Opening hours

Cathedral: September to June, 10:00 to 20:30; July and August, 10:00 to 21:00. Tourist visits aren't allowed during religious services. Museum and dome: Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 14:30.

Closed

The museum closes on Sundays, holy days of obligation and days of special worship in the cathedral.

Go in the morning

The cathedral stays open into the evening, but the museum and dome only open in the morning, Monday to Saturday. If you're coming for the views, forget afternoons and Sundays. The cathedral itself recommends two slots: 10:00–11:00 and 13:00–14:00.

Masses interrupt tourist visits: you can't walk around the interior while they're on, so check the worship schedule first.

Donation only, or museum and dome

The church asks for a €1 donation. For €8, the museum ticket adds the sacristy, chapter house, collection and dome, which you reach by stairs. The audio guide is free and plays on your phone over the museum's wifi.

Inside the museum you can only take photos on the balconies and in the dome. On days with a changing of the guard or military parade at the Royal Palace, you can't linger on the balcony.

Combining it with the Royal Palace

They're next door to each other. If you're paying for a guided tour of the palace anyway, the one that includes the cathedral covers both. If only the Almudena interests you, you don't need it.
