There's no single official ranking. Each museum counts in its own way and publishes when it likes, so these tables gather separate official figures and only work as a rough comparison.
Most visited museums in Spain, 2025
| Museum | Visitors in 2025 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Prado Museum, Madrid | 3,513,402 | Ministry of Culture |
| Reina Sofía, main site | 1,601,732 | Ministry of Culture |
| Guggenheim Bilbao | 1,305,003 | Museum |
| Museu Picasso, Barcelona | 1,021,500 | Barcelona City Council |
| Thyssen Museum, Madrid | Nearly a million | Museum |
| Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid | 864,201 | Ministry of Culture |
| Dalí Theatre-Museum, Figueres | 710,297 | Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí |
| Alhambra Museum, Granada | 574,298 | Andalusian government |
| Museo de Bellas Artes, Seville | 357,515 | Andalusian government |
| Altamira Museum, Cantabria | 293,700 | Ministry of Culture |
Two monuments beat almost all of these, though they aren't museums: the Sagrada Família, with 4,877,567 visitors, and the Alhambra, with 2,726,871. The Alhambra figure covers the whole monument. The Andalusian government's figures are provisional.
Museums around the world
| Museum | Visitors | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Louvre, Paris | 9 million | 2025 |
| British Museum, London | 6.5 million | Financial year 2024/25 |
| Metropolitan Museum, New York | More than 5.7 million | Fiscal year 2025 |
A financial year doesn't match the calendar year. Some very busy museums are missing, such as the Vatican Museums and the Uffizi, because we couldn't find a recent official annual figure.
What this means for your trip
More visitors doesn't mean a better museum, but it does mean more demand for tickets. At the busiest ones it pays to have a time slot before you arrive. The free hours at the Prado and the Reina Sofía work better for a short visit to one particular work.
If you'd rather have fewer people around you, look lower down the table: Altamira and the Bellas Artes in Seville get a fraction of the Prado's visitors.
